A MESSAGE FROM ONE OF OUR READERS:

Lavanya Senthil is a reader who wrote to us with concerns about plastic ending up in compost. She wanted to remind everyone to remove the stickers off of their produce before they compost the items. Thank you for the reminder Lavanya.

Here’s part of that she wrote:

“Have you noticed the stickers on produce? Do you peel off the stickers before you throw away your fruit or vegetable peels? Perhaps you do, or maybe you think it’s not a big deal! These produce labels that have the PLU codes are often made of plastic, which does not decompose the way organic waste does. This is a problem for home composting, as well as commercial composting companies. These stickers break down into microplastics and can get into waterways that end up in the ocean. Also, if produce is sent to farms to feed animals and the animals consume these plastic stickers, it is harmful to them. So next time you think it’s just a little sticker, remember microplastics and the innocent animals! Please be mindful of what you put in the compost bin!”
